It was founded in 1944 to organise a wide range of social and cultural activities at which the members could share common interests and make new friends. As well as a regular Newsletter, the committee organises a wide range of events, on average one per month, for the 220 or so members and their families.

Membership is open to citizens of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth and their families as well as persons of British or Commonwealth nationality prior to marriage. There are three categories of membership: individual, family, and short-term. Short-term membership is a new category suitable for young people such as students, apprentices or au pairs who will be in Basle for a short time and are seeking contact with British people.
